We are calling for artworks for a member show to kick off the DVA gallery exhibition program in 2020!

Climate Change is on the tip of everyone’s tongue from politicians, farmers to climate scientists and young people. Opinions differ but everyone has one. The City of Darwin has declared a climate emergency, and this is a fantastic opportunity for the community to reflect on social, political and environmental elements of this international phenomena.

The exhibition will be judged by a panel of local arts industry members with 10 works selected by a panel of judges to feature in the City of Darwin Lightboxes across the city. The judges will select high quality works befitting the theme from a breadth of emerging and established artists.

Calibrating Parameters
15 Mar, 2024
“The inherent drive that defines parameters also holds the potential to transcend them.” With a focus rooted in deep connection with the source material, José creates immersive paintings that exude gentle tones and framed reveries. He retains the original inspiration for each work, allowing it to evolve into a new narrative - a fitting prelude to his language of strictness & extravagance. Curated by: Rhea Ornias Tan Jose engages in daily rituals of challenging the medium, exploring the parameters of his vision and the potential of his experience. His practice of restraint creates an indelible ripple in his works, which also serves as a form of catharsis, allowing empathy to find expression.
Escaping the Mundane

As a self-taught artist residing in Darwin, I take inspiration from plants and wildlife in my local area, favourites being flowers and birds. I consider myself a process artist, for me the, ‘creating and making’, are where I find the most joy. Art is my escape from the everyday mundane.

The Australian Outback light is intense, full of colour and heat. Paint thickens as the asphalt heats, sticky and viscous. This light is tempered, come dusk, changing the palette. In this rugged, timeless land life abounds despite this harshness; quirky, intrusive, claiming its ownership. I am concerned with mark-making, to capture the feeling of a surface, which may contrast with the surrounding textures. I use a variety to tools to scrape and work with the paint to build up a textured surface, which is often in contrast with the smoothness of water and reflections. Opening: Friday 1 September 2023 6pm - 8pm Showing: 1 - 23 September 2023 Where: DVA - Ground Floor, Harbour View Plaza 1/8 McMinn St, Darwin City, NT Gallery opening hours for exhibitions: Wednesday 12 - 5pm, Thursday & Friday 10am - 5pm, Saturday 10am - 2pm

As a profession, art therapy is still very white, western and colonial. As an art therapist from a non-white and non-western background, Eva examines trauma and healing from a different perspective. She explores the power of art and storytelling to critique the toxic systems that are making us unwell as a collective. She imagines a reconnection to nature-culture as alternative sites of power to reclaim healing centered on our identity. Eva is an art therapist with a Malaysian Chinese background. Her diasporic and multicultural background offers her a unique vantage point to critique the dominant culture. Opening: Friday 1 September 2023 6pm - 8pm Showing: 1 - 23 September 2023 Where: DVA - Ground Floor, Harbour View Plaza 1/8 McMinn St, Darwin City, NT Gallery One Gallery opening hours for exhibitions: Wednesday 12 - 5pm, Thursday & Friday 10am - 5pm, Saturday 10am - 2pm

My work celebrates images of women standing in, emerging from, or swimming through, water. They’re strong, beautiful, and rendered in unique poses so women can confidently celebrate freedom, and live braver lives. Through vibrant colours, drips, and splashes of paint and thread, I evoke a liberating space where my women are free from restraint and free to be who they want to be. My source underwater photographs were taken whilst on a photo shoot to beautiful Bitter Springs - my model is my daughter Haylee Inkster - and my exhibition is named after a line in Jeannie Gunn’s “We of the Never Never”. Opening: Friday 1 September 2023 6pm - 8pm Showing: 1 - 23 September 2023 Where: DVA - Ground Floor, Harbour View Plaza 1/8 McMinn St, Darwin City, NT Gallery opening hours for exhibitions: Wednesday 12 - 5pm, Thursday & Friday 10am - 5pm, Saturday 10am - 2pm
