2026 Northern Territory Art Award

The Northern Territory Art Award, led by Darwin Visual Arts, was established in 2024 to showcase the depth, diversity, and brilliance of Northern Territory artists. Held every two years, the Award is open to artists and creatives across the Northern Territory.

In 2026, the Award will expand in partnership with Charles Darwin University, with the finalists exhibition to be held at the the stunning new Midpul Gallery in the heart of the Darwin CBD. Winners over 4 categories, including people's choice, will be awarded a total prize pool of $10,000.

Exhibition dates: Friday, 29 May – Saturday, 11 July 2026

My career in Defence and work with Veterans has inspired me to reflect on my life after service, and the lives of others, especially when that service is part of your identity. This exhibition is my reflection on veteran’s existence after they take off the uniform.

Creating the works for this show, I have enjoyed trying different techniques and tools. A small brayer has become my favourite “brush”. It has allowed me to drop focus from having exact lines and ratio, to just creating with a sense of fun and exploration.

ArtBroken is an audacious exploration of the concept of 'broken'—shattering conventions, traditions, and preconceptions to redefine artistic expression. This multifaceted exhibition brings together a group of diverse artists, each interpreting the theme through their own distinct medium and experience. From fractured canvases to reassembled materials, from performance art to animatronics, ArtBroken defies expectations and invites audiences into a space of creative disruption.

Inspired by art including Ioanna Thymianidis’ groundbreaking performance in 2023, where she created a sculpture in a destructive performance artwork, ArtBroken extends this act of defiance across multiple disciplines. Peter Gough’s ‘Frankenstein Art’ transforms the canvas from a pristine medium into an expressive battlefield, breaking free from traditional expectations. Jimmy Bamble experiments with animatronics, bringing his cartoon bear to life in a unique fusion of painting and movement. Craig Smith repurposes discarded furniture and found objects, using historical imagery to create an installation that questions artistic permanence. David Dalzell explores themes of cancellation, resilience, and queer mythology through visual and performance art. Sophie Bound embraces vulnerability by stepping outside of her comfort zone, shedding the need for approval, and creating immersive three-dimensional works.

The exhibition will incorporate interactive elements, breaking traditional gallery separations and immersing the audience in a dynamic, evolving space. By dismantling norms and revealing process alongside the final artworks, ArtBroken fosters an experience where creation and destruction coalesce into something entirely new.

Through risk-taking, experimentation, and boundary-pushing expression, ArtBroken celebrates the power of breaking away—from convention, expectation, and limitation—inviting audiences to witness the transformative energy of artistic disruption.

This exhibition reflects the ‘Revitalisation’ of ‘Femininity’ and ‘Cultural Resilience’. As a mixed Aboriginal woman these two themes have impacted myself first hand, but because of the fact our ancestors sacrificed and fought for our happiness I was inspired to decide that there isn’t room for negativity in my exhibition. Instead, my pieces will showcase the rejoicing of life and pride within these themes. My works consist of vibrant colours representing a breath of freedom and celebration, while the details reveal our journeys, memories and potential of our generation. My exhibition being a reminder to not forget the injustices but to overcome and overpower them with greatness’.

‘Ways of Seeing: Miya/Significant Plants – Beginnings’ showcases works from five local, culturally diverse, female artists – Glynis Lee, Angelina Lewis, Juwayning Lorraine Williams, Linda Yarrowin, Nena Zanos - created during a printmaking project at Wagait Beach.

Delicately lined drypoints, vibrant collagraphs, ‘blueprint’ cyanotypes, colourful monotypes and atmospheric photogravure reflect each artist’s personal and/or cultural visual interpretation of their chosen local plants. The Emmiyengal and Larrakia First Nations artists communicate their deep knowledge and ties to country through accompanying stories.

A video documenting the plant-collecting phase of the project provides individual artistic, geographic, language and cultural context.

Be exposed to obscurities of the universe with artworks including, ‘Meteor Shower’ and ‘Supernova’. The intense bursts of energy are expressed through radiating lines of reds, oranges and yellows. Dense layering of vibrant colours is interspersed with splattering techniques creating an ethereal experience for the viewer.

In contrast to this pulsating, glowing vivacity is the depiction of an unending and timeless universe in paintings titled ‘The Wormhole’ and ‘Galaxy Web’. Dark colours with webs of silver and ‘Star dust’, generate the sensation of an expanse beyond galaxies.

Experience the infinite vastness of the multiverse through the depiction in abstract expressionism.

Extreme isolation, social combined with geographical, is almost a place of non-existence. A place so quiet, yet where the mind screams loudly.

These were the feelings I was trying to escape when I bought a camera while living and working alone overseas, yet they came through the lens and are still my favourite themes to shoot.

The Ray Hayes Collection

Ray Hayes moved to the Northern Territory in the early 1980’s to work in Yirrkala and then Darwin. He was a passionate advocate for Human Rights, Labour Rights, Land Rights and the Environment. Ray assisted Yothu Yindi in obtaining the initial funding for band. He advocated and assisted Aboriginal people throughout his working life at Bagot Community and with the Larrakia Nation.

Ray was an artist, a printmaker at the Tin Sheds Gallery in Sydney and he held solo painting shows in Darwin. Throughout his time in Arnhem Land, Ray purchased traditional artworks, his collection is presented in this show.

The Bukaway group, are collective of Yolngu men and women from Yirrkala and based in Nhulunbuy. Through three workshops, the Bukaway Dirramu (men) transform wax models into striking metal sculptures through the ancient craft of lost wax casting. Tracey Polglaze lived in Nhulunbuy for a year and in that short time became well known for her outstanding images of the locals, both two and four legged. Her well known graphite images on local maps sees her work sought out for capturing memorable moments. She completed a Batchelor of Visual Arts in 2007, but pursued “sensible vocations “until recently becoming a full time artist.

Kaz Hill has taught in the territory since the 80’s and the last 14 years have been spent in Nhulunbuy teaching art and participating in both visual and performing events within the community. She has a Batchelor in Art Education and Graduate Diploma in Design and Technology. Now “trying to retire” she is noted as stating “I just want to do my art”.

Tracey and Kaz met through the East Arnhem Regional Arts society and contributed works into local members shows and events.

A few years ago, Alex wrote in a journal that he didn’t feel he had any artistic gifts. In an ironic twist which reflects that we are always capable of learning new things, Alex has been on a journey of discovering a completely new form of expression. Believing that we are created beings, Alex feels that somewhere inside each of us is the desire to create new things and to reflect the beauty we see in the world, and that it is important that this part of us finds a healthy expression.

Wood sculpting is the art of revealing and many of the pieces of timber Alex scavenges are damaged. Sometimes the wounds are superficial but others can run deeply and ultimately can’t be hidden or avoided. Instead they need to be gently integrated into the story of the final piece and which may even add to the beauty.

The exhibition is a collection of hand-portrait paintings using a contemporary fresco process developed by the artist. A handmade textural plaster ground is created with ochres and mineral watercolour paints, then sculpted and painted upon. The ochre colours of the NT and historical Renaissance frescoes inspire the colour palette. The choice of subjects reflects the multicultural Darwin community. The paintings reveal the subject’s movement and energy through flowing, embedded colours, sanded and selectively eroded with water to create a timeless, tactile surface.

My inspirations and ideas with the exhibition are connecting people to country and the richness of first nations culture, the wonder and beauty of our natural world and the sheer joy I receive when people find healing value in my works. For many years I had the yearning to connect with family from the desert. This journey bought me to Alice Springs where I met my Central Australian Briscoe Family, and realised my calling to country and rich ancestral ties. That coming together rekindled

family bonds and through art has connected me with my ancestral family, stories and homeland. I have been given permission to paint certain aspects of my cultural

connection and am honoured to be able to share some threads of this deep and rich Australian historical tapestry from the ‘Anmatyerre’ first nations people.

Escaping the Mundane | Michelle Taylor

As a self-taught artist residing in Darwin, I take inspiration from plants and wildlife in my local area, favourites being flowers and birds. I consider myself a process artist, for me the, ‘creating and making’, are where I find the most joy. Art is my escape from the everyday mundane.

My artistic journey is a blend of traditional and experimental approaches. While oils are my primary medium, I also delve into fibre crafts, mixed media, and resin art, exploring the boundaries of creativity. As a Middle School art teacher, I'm dedicated to nurturing a love for the arts in the next generation, guiding them to express themselves freely. While realism remains my cornerstone, completing my Diploma of Arts at CDU sparked a journey of exploration. Venturing into stylized compositions and diverse mediums like acrylic, resin, and mixed media has propelled me beyond my comfort zone, enriching my artistic repertoire and pushing the boundaries of my creativity.

The Australian Outback light is intense, full of colour and heat. Paint thickens as the asphalt heats, sticky and viscous. This light is tempered, come dusk, changing the palette. In this rugged, timeless land life abounds despite this harshness; quirky, intrusive, claiming its ownership.

I am concerned with mark-making, to capture the feeling of a surface, which may contrast with the surrounding textures. I use a variety to tools to scrape and work with the paint to build up a textured surface, which is often in contrast with the smoothness of water and reflections.

Through vibrant colours, drips, and splashes of paint and thread, I evoke a liberating space where my women are free from restraint and free to be who they want to be. My source underwater photographs were taken whilst on a photo shoot to beautiful Bitter Springs - my model is my daughter Haylee Inkster - and my exhibition is named after a line in Jeannie Gunn’s “We of the Never Never”.

This Exhibition celebrates the good times had over the year. A commemoration of friendship and family, using vibrant colours and playful patterns to depict images of moments had which are held deep in the heart.

"I consider myself an encaustic artist. I have used other forms of media over some 50-plus years of artistic practice, painting and creating, but encaustics is my preferred medium – I would go so far as to say that I am ‘addicted’!

For the “Cosmology Series”, I have drawn inspiration from various scientists and theorists and embellished them in a metaphorical way to reflect how I think the universe functions. In this way, I hope my artwork is both educational and aesthetically pleasing.

Nebulae, galaxies, and quasars are depicted from memory—rather than literally—as a symphony of colours, and I paint them in my go-to medium, encaustics. I appreciated the most recent exploding star in the Milky Way Galaxy, Kepler's supernova so much, it became the starting point for the “Cosmology Series”.

Ulrike Kachel is a bird photographer in the Northern Territory. While photography is a long-time passion, her birding journey started when she moved to the NT during COVID19. While spending two weeks in quarantine at Howard Springs, Ulrike used her daily walks to capture the birdlife visiting the camp. Since then—travelling around Darwin and beyond—Ulrike has captured many amazing NT birds. Although a photograph is the desired outcome, for Ulrike birding and photography is a mindfulness process that helps balance her busy life. Ulrike Kachel’s “Birds on my Mind” debut exhibition invites the viewer to join her in some of these mindful moments.

A Multi-sensory exhibition, combining illustrations and soundscapes, Growing explores finding home within ourselves and rebuilding after trauma.

Piiij has created a collection of digitally drawn images as an exercise in active healing through honest examination of self. Hyper detailed depictions of the human form with plants sprouting from within, this visual interpretation of internal restoration invites you to see things clearly, all of the flaws, but also the parts that bloom.

Inspired by Piiij's focus on themes of healing and growth, Neha's conceptual sound art builds on the audiences visual experience of the work, combining corporeal sonics with rhythmic compositions, empathic refrains, and aural ecologies evoking flora and fauna.

Jim builds detailed scenes from Old Darwin such as Chinese New Year and Cyclone Tracy and other events that resonate. Marianne Foster is a Territory artist, art teacher and mother. This exhibition explores the lesser-known architectural designs of the urban landscape that perhaps we as urban jungle dwellers take for granted. The eccentricities of Darwin's ever-changing built environment combined with its rich sunset colours.

Marianne’s travels in France and her penchant to use found objects in her art are also sources of inspiration for this exhibition. In 2020 she joined everyone else and adopted a 'covid' dog and now dogs are a great source of inspiration in her art, you will see them displayed in used tiny sardine cans as glamourous hounds.

The Great Emu Wars celebrates the infamous Australian war of the same name, in which a rebellious mob of emus out flanked the machine-gun mounted jeeps sent to eradicate them. Ninety-one years later, Bev Garside portrays the battles between the Army and emus in a humorous and slightly sarcastic light, using felt and mixed media to visualise the tenacious and resilient emus. The emus are joined in arms by other quirky fauna from around Australia, prompting viewers to ask themselves whether there is more that we too can do to support our native wildlife against climate change and habitat destruction.

Valérie Baya, a visual artist from Mauritius, replicates the sceneries of her native island, as well as its unique landscapes. My cyber collage paintings are inspired by internet images, my own photographs and observations.

I love patterns and symbols, and the paint effects of metallic and iridescent paints, for their glistening colours and effects.

I love the word, "cyber", coined in 1948 by a mathematician, and everything it doesn't appear to properly define. I've wanted to know for years what it means and now, so satisfactorily, I still don't!

As a self-taught, enthusiastic amateur artist, I have been strongly influenced by political demonstration banner art and declamatory, agitprop posters, from an early age.In my grimmer paintings, the future has arrived, reflecting each current patriarchy’s success at abusing Nature, the biosphere, Pachamama, Indigenous-animist tree worshipping peoples, Gaia, our Mother Earth, women, and our children. I use dark line outlining, comic, cartoon, collagist, graphic novel, political banner, poster, and colouring-in styles, that you'd expect from a school teacher-programmed artist always preferring carefully delineated, shareable messages.

Habitat is the first solo show of Darwin ceramist Megan Wild.

For this show, Megan has used stoneware paper clay, low- and mid-fire glazes to create sculptures and wares depicting creatures and scenes of the natural environment.

“My work extends beyond the realm of Australian Wildlife but for this recent collection of pieces, I chose to convey my deep gratitude to Darwin for giving me a home and place to heal and thrive. The diversity of animals present in the Northern Territory is astounding. I see a profound love of nature amongst the community with a passion for conservation. The relationship between art and music is often the source of my inspiration as in my paintings for this exhibition. My interest began with my love for the music of The Planets by Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1917. My research led me to the astrology that inspired the composer, followed by a closer study of the music he composed, and the beautiful images of the planets as seen by the Hubble Telescope. Then came the excitement of the James Webb telescope images of distant galaxies. Finally, I was back on Planet Earth and I found my inspiration in the gardens of my home environment. All the paintings in this latter section of my exhibition are painted from nature and inspired by the incredible music composed and performed on Planet Earth.

Veronica Priestley, a Territory artist/designer and world traveller, designs and paints artisan silk fabric, for fashion and interiors.

Originally a studio designer in Sydney; creator of original textile designs for a thriving fashion and textile industry. Veronica moved to Darwin and its tropical vitality and colour, inspired her to paint on silk with rich and vibrant dyes. The beginning of a long love affair with hand painted silk that continues today.

Veronica’s hand-crafted fabrics are beautifully coloured, often multi-textured with bold designs. They may incorporate batik, shibori, carved lino and stencil prints.

Veronicas’ travels in India have been her source of inspiration for ‘Journey’. The exhibition will show travel-inspired hand-painted silk fabrics and silk jewellery, photographs and travel journal art.

Jayde and Arlya explore the plethora of flora and fauna reliant on the ocean for their existence, including humans. Drawing from their scientific and artistic backgrounds they bring you this collection.

Jayde Hopkins of Nawula Almaren Aboriginal Art specialises in vibrant colours, utilising dot painting and more contemporary techniques to paint the natural world around her. She is an Aboriginal woman studying a Bachelor of Biological Sciences.

Arlya Denholm of Tuckey Illustrations is an adept scientific illustrator inspired by the ocean. Her work varies from scientifically accurate works to creative paintings inspired by the world around.

The sol Project is the first solo exhibition for up and coming NXT GEN Artist Nomthi Mkhwebu. Having grown up in the Territory, most of her young days were spent exploring with family and friends. The beaches, rivers, gorges, the outback.

She wanted her first piece to capture those memories. “The sol project”, built under the expertise of Mark Graff, is an ever growing collection introducing its first piece. “The sol Table”.

This single piece exhibition features art work by Indigenous artist Leigh Fawlstone. The Sol, is built tough but beautiful. Elevated by rebar steel springs, the piece is a contrast of strength and delicacy.

These paintings, I hope, go some way to exploring the complex relationship between our human form in the physical world and the desire we all have to express ourselves as individuals in an increasingly complex and surreal world.

In them I hope to draw together the nebulous concepts we have of the ‘real’, the ‘not so real’, the ‘unreal’ and the ‘surreal.

In some the ‘real’ is taken from mythology, some from antiquity and some from those who have been happy to sit, lie, etc. for me.

The September issue is a collection of original artworks created by Amber Reid and Heather Whybrow. This exhibition is a combination of contemporary takes on Darwin Iconic historical architecture, mixed with vibrant visual imagery that alters the viewer’s state of mind when they are observing an artwork, even if only for a very brief moment.

The idea that just by looking at images, the viewer can shift their focus and ‘escape ‘from the reality of daily life. Whether that be imagining yourself living life in a retro inspired Darwin or being taken away to a colourful world of 1960’s flower prints, fashion, and obscure patterns.

We hope to evoke Images of places, a vivid colour palette and pattern evoking memories of freedom, fun and a sense of playfulness.

Metal Storm is about the intersection of urban living clashing with the bush. The expended machine age is dumped on the urban fringe where the two meet and chaos is the outcome or some would say urban hell. Car parts, metal machinery, the industrial revolution found in the bush, dumped or burnt is now reinvented into machine art.

All components are found or scavenged, nothing is new. Steel products that were made for car parts or machinery are now just lying in the bush.

With these works James reinstates some of the value into the workmanship that went into these creations.

Into the Top End is the first solo exhibition of young emerging Indonesian-Australian artist Ifa Shiddiq, who is known as “esse” or “eskrimko” online. Specialising in character-based illustration and design, her passion is to create Australian media.

The exhibition will feature a series of digital art introducing the Top End duo, Darwin and Palmerston. Through these characters, Ifa will explore their own personalities and wholesome dynamic.

Taking influence from anime, manga, cartoons, Australiana, and her own experiences, Ifa creates memorable characters with distinct designs and personalities. She appreciates how anime and manga captures the fantasy of mundane experiences which she wishes to replicate through Australia’s unique lifestyle and culture.

Gurambai is the Larrakia name for the area now known as Rapid Creek and means elbow, referring to the shape of the creek at the salt water end.

The Rapid Creek Artist Collective are a group of creatives deeply grateful to create, live, love, teach and learn on Larrakia land.

Aly de Groot, Katie Bradley, Catherine Miles, Alison Dowell, Russell Mead, Henry and Fernanda Dupal have diverse and dynamic practises that range across textiles, painting, ceramics, jewellery and printmaking, and serendipitously they all live within walking distance of one another.

WILD NORTH COMICS exhibition at Darwin Visual Arts Gallery celebrates Darwin’s own comic book anthology featuring some of the best artists and writers working in the comic book medium from across the Northern Territory and Australia. This special event will feature the launch of ZERO POINT: ORIGINS #1 by Jonathon Saunders and the AUSTRALI collected edition – the first stand alone comics published by Wild North Comics!

The exhibition will also feature original prints, stencil art and poster art by artists Jonathon Saunders, Timothy Parish, Daniel Hartney, Dani Heilbronn, Anneke Putri, Louise Benton, Mat Selwyn, Theofilus Rigas, Shilo Mcnamee and Levin Diatschenko as well as internationally renowned artists including Tim Molloy, Pius Bak and Sutu.

Dark Social Realism gives you a chance to capture something on ‘film’ that speaks to the structure of our urban and rural society; one aspect, perhaps, of what life is really like; or how the prevailing culture and norms affect everyday lives, in this picturesque place.

Silver: a metal precious in many cultures– and in many languages synonymous with money or valuable tableware. Silver can also be used for drawing: a silver stylus leaves a mark that tarnishes to a warm grey. Silverpoint drawing was popular in the Renaissance, but little used since the invention of the graphite pencil.

In this exhibition, Mike Bowman uses traditional methods to make Sterling silver spoons and jewellery.

Alison Worsnop’s silverpoint drawings record a population of Eucalyptus alba. Many trees were killed in a recent wildfire. Her series of elegant and delicate silverpoint drawings on wood panel commemorates the survivors.

On November 6 the Homebodies film (drawing together all twelve solos) won 'Best Experimental Film' at the 2021 Fist Full of Films Festival Awards Night at the Deckchair Cinema.

The award was supported by Darwin Visual Arts Gallery, as a result their multimedia gallery space was awarded to Tracks to show the Homebodies film during the gallery's members exhibition.

The Gallery Installation includes the winning film, accompanied by the six films of each of the duet pairings.

After significant injury to her dominant hand, Kaye Strange was set on a path to rethink her position as an artist. PostOpPoP is the title for an eclectic body of works created following the accident. A play on words, 'post-op' is utilised to describe the period after a surgical operation and ;pop' employed to play on the idea of 'bursting one's bubble'!

In a physical and psychological transformation, and a re-train her mind's eye, the artist has created a fantastical collection of some 100 drawings of her impairment, colourful abstract paintings, sculptures and even a needlepoint - celebrating life going - on!

From the outset I sought to explore the strong connection between my love of painting and my lifelong love of the music of Beethoven, in this instance, his 9 symphonies. I decided to do this by painting the hands that play the instruments and direct the music which provides me with such enjoyment. Each of the 9 paintings has a connection with one of Beethoven's 9 symphonies. The 10th painting relates to Beethoven’s exquisite Emperor piano concerto.

The Boneyard Unleashed presents a selection of work that represents the diversity and breadth of Nick’s artistic output.

Starting from finely beaded jewellery representing Tasmanian wildflowers, Nick’s creative animal became unleashed in the NT after meeting her late husband Weed when they started Boneyard NT.

Out of the Boneyard to the fairy portal, Nick’s work uses the recycled, discarded bones of life to recreate her world, using nature as a starting point and fantasy as portal. Her art practice includes skull painting, wearable art, finely beaded jewellery, sculpture, and fanged creatures inspired by the natural world.

But so inspired by the beautiful Botanical Gardens, iconic Northern Territory thunderstorms, and the sumptuous view of Pee Wee’s Restaurant at East Point, I found myself trying to capture those scenic view on canvas; I hope you like the aesthetic results.

At a time when we should be frantically planting and preserving trees, it is being made easier and quicker for Pastoralists to clear land in the Northern Territory. So this small exhibition is a quiet protest. It records some ordinary local trees: which we might casually bulldoze and burn, as if they were vermin, instead of treasuring them as cleansers of the air we breathe. These include: a family of mangroves at Crab Claw Island Resort; Early season burn-offs on the Cox Peninsular (a fellow guest told me proudly that ‘we do this every year, to clean up the dry stuff’); a group of trees that were burned in 2018 – happily surrounded by water in La Niňa rains; Trees which I watch for birds from our front veranda (and which are regarded as a fire hazard…)

They are drawn on paper, simply with a burnt stick - charcoal - with occasional touches of earthy ochres and chalk.

As an adjunct to this exhibition, I have include d a book of small watercolours. They started as abstract experiments with colour but became landscapes and creatures. Imagined and remembered places appeared. Premonitions, history, disasters, warfare, fire, habitat degradation and extinction were visualised. I decided to keep them as a personal record of 2020, an exhibition-in-a-book. Here, we were fortunate, having escaped the ravages of the Pandemic, but we have watched how it has distracted us from the much larger and more serious problems of environmental destruction and Climate Change. Our distraction has lost time and allowed insidious and opportunist exploitation to advance.

The Art Educators of the NT’s (AENT) annual exhibition is back in a new location at Darwin Visual Arts, on the Ground Floor of the Harbour View Plaza at the corner of McMinn Street and Tiger Brennan Drive, in Darwin city.

The exhibition, “Recovery” invites members to reflect on how things may have changed since the latest flu pandemic began about a year ago and how we have come out the other side. The vibrant selection of art works from AENT artists ranges in mediums and has become a local exhibition highlight.

Workshops throughout the year and our annual exhibition provide an opportunity for sharing and extending professional and artistic practice.

We are offering botanical workshops reflecting this year’s theme of “Recovery”.

Works created in these workshops may be included in the exhibition.

Work inspired by the current climate and environmental crisis and yearning for serious commitment to political activity within First Nations and Australian peoples.

David Dalzell uses the majestic wildlife of the Australian continent and human architecture, specifically parliamentary houses - the symbols of modern decision making.

He plays with perspective between our built landscape and Australia's natural wildlife, exploring tensions between decisions and their environmental impact. The work helps to convey a warning of uncontrolled change. To aid this, David contrasts the control of pen and ink work with the more spontaneous, energetic elements of fiery watercolour, or the organic representation of sea level rises.

The artist’s inspiration grew from the mythology of the First Nations People of the Top End - the wildfires brought by the red-tailed black cockatoo's bright plumage, harbingers of the dry season. There is a sense of beauty and danger in Australia’s natural heritage; the precious and vulnerable species in need of protection, and the hope for refuge and call to action from its voiceless occupants.

"Transmogrify", for Bev and Adrienne, focuses on the beauty found in the environment, drawing attention to and encouraging enjoyment of their surroundings. With their work they hope to highlight the need for the conservation and protection of the environment. Their works encompass the idea of transmogrify: they begin with raw materials and through different processes transform those materials into something unexpected, different or magical.

Bev starts with fleece and goes through a process of wetting, heating, rolling and stabbing to produce an artwork. She combines varied materials such as handmade paper, cardboard and then adds stitch to result in beautiful tactile felted artworks.

Adrienne starts with wax, tree resin and powdered pigment that is boiled, burnt, gouged, doused with alcohol and set alight to result in a gloriously glossy, smooth yet tactile surface.

Both mediums lend themselves to be manipulated into surprising forms for both viewer and artist. This is part of the magic of their mediums: the thrill of the unknown and unexpected. The challenge of transforming a traditional art form into something that is both contemporary and full of surprise.

This video work, created during lockdown in India (where the Melbourne-based artist happened to be), involves two pairs of hands going about daily activities, with a new post pandemic addition - hand sanitizer.

As we're thrown into a world of staying stuck in one place, fear and mistrust, all we have are questions. How do we negotiate moments of fun, joy and pleasure amidst the confusion, irritability and annoyance caused by the new unknown? How do we navigate our way through spaces, ensuring physical distance?

Does physical distance create social distance? Perhaps this colourless liquid with its sterile, chemical smell is the answer to all problems created by the situation. It makes human interaction possible again.

It's the new hero in our new normal world. We know we need sanitizer, but how necessary is human touch? Meanwhile, we keep sanitizing our hands obsessively... for sanity.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, we have been forced to think a great deal about “home”.

We’ve been encouraged--even required-- to stay home, go home, find a way home, or we’ve been frustrated in our attempts to get home!

We've been told to work from home, school our kids at home, and ‘holiday’ at home – literally in our own backyards or close surroundings.

We’ve perhaps even asked ourselves, 'where is my home?' Do I have a home? Or is my home wherever my heart is?

So it seemed fitting that Darwin’s visual artists might be willing to express their feelings, impressions and interpretations of "home" for our first exhibition, a Members’ Show, for 2021.

By way of appropriating, layering and collaging I hope to connect a range of rather disconnected subjects together into one unified piece. These paintings are a representation of the life that artist Susan has built in Darwin. Good friends; a home that visitors call a ‘sanctuary’, with glorious comfy red chairs and waterlilies; and its surroundings – the trees, the sea, and the amazing sky.

Susan Penfold has dabbled in art at various times, but found pastels a bit over five years ago. Loving their tactile nature and the brilliance of the pigment, she has been building her skills in landscapes, still life and portraiture. Having won the Seabreeze Festival Jetty Art Prize in 2020 she decided that she better take her art more seriously. This is her first exhibition. She has lived in Darwin for the last 16 years.

“Heavy Metal” is about the intersection of urban living clashing with the bush, the expended machine age is dumped on the urban fringe where the two meet and chaos is the outcome or some would say urban hell. Car parts, metal machinery, the post industrial revolution found in the bush, dumped, burnt and now reinvented into machine art. All components are found or scavenged nothing is new. Steel products that were made for car parts or machinery are now just lying in the bush. With these works James reinstates some of the value into the workmanship that went into these creations.

We had to cancel the offical opening of the CLIMATE Citylife Lightbox Exhibition in April due to COVID restrictions, but now we are very excited to celebrate this wonderful exhibition together this September!

Join Darwin Visual Arts and the City of Darwin to view three of the lightbox pieces on display and hear from Dr Kristin Metcalfe, CDU Fellow and Environmental Scientist, as she speaks on the carbon sequestration services that Darwin's mangroves perform.

Join us on the Nightcliff Foreshore (east of the Nightcliff Pool), at 5.30pm sharp for this free public talk.

There will be time to ask questions of Dr Metcalfe afterwards and to meet some of the artists involved in the lightbox exhibition.

Taking on the role of DVA chair during "Arts in the Time of Corona", much like "Love in the Time of Cholera" has been an epic story with many twists and turns. Members of the committee and the larger arts community have had to adapt to changes in our organisation in response to the pandemic, which has seen us distancing, closing the physical gallery space, re-opening and moving exhibitions online.

Having been part of the Darwin and wider NT community now for over 25 years, I see the role of the whole arts community as essential to how we view ourselves. Advocating for the arts is entwined in the personal, community and economic structure of every well-developed society and the NT is no exception. In amongst the aforementioned twists and turns experienced so far in my tenure as Chair, have emerged the following highlights;

Since re-opening in May, the support we [DVA] have received from the public has been fabulous and for that I thank you. Openings have been well attended and we had a hugely successful screening of Priscilla Queen of the Desert at Deckchair Cinemas recently. All donations received from the night will be matched by Plus1 funding from Creative Partnerships Australia, making the event not only a great social undertaking for the organisation but also a great financial one.

The recent addition of the online exhibition space has resulted in sales continuing long after exhibitions have closed, providing an excellent opportunity for our exhibiting artists to not only broaden awareness of their work, but also the potential of sales.

Our new(ish) staff Shauna and Lynda are finding rhythm and routine now that the gallery is back up and running on the ground floor of Harbour View Plaza. They can be contacted via 0477 886 070, 8981 9351 or by visiting the gallery space Thursday & Friday from 10am-5pm.

‘Slippage' explores how bodily presence may (or may not), be encapsulated and transmitted through the digital realm.

Anna McDermott's practice - which usually choreographs spaces for bodies to navigate - now relies upon digital avenues to choreograph these experiences in new ways; examining the emotional, personal and social boundaries in which we are situated or contained.

'Slippage' seeks to not privilege ocularity; understanding the potential for sound’s ephemerality to elasticise one’s encounter of space.

Through video and sound Anna offers viewers (listeners), alternate modes of exchange and ‘touch’ in a world where the ecology of relations between the body and space are both amplified and vulnerable.

Anna McDermott's multimedia masterpiece opens on Friday, August 21 at 6pm and runs until September 5.

A particular style of dystopian novel (e.g. 1984; The Bar Code Tattoo; The Handmaid’s Tale), have highlighted the problems with governments tracking people, in that they lose their individuality and are often scared to act outside of the expectations of ‘Big Brother’.

In 2020, the use of the barcode (along with microchipping) appears to be becoming normalised (whereas in 1987, the Australian card was abandoned). Likewise, we are constantly blasted with contradictory images and text, especially through the media, in that we are expected to be ourselves, which may be inherently different to what is essentially sold to us in that we should look generic, but more importantly we should all think the same. If we don’t think the same as the prevailing view, we are different, and it seems that there is no middle ground, only extreme of thinking and you are either “with us” or “against us”.

In the current exhibition, the artist aims to use artwork that focuses on human beings becoming generic, but also highlight that if (and when) we do become engraved and a way of tracking each of us becomes engrained as normal, we are still individuals and that while “they” try to indoctrinate each of use to look the same, act the same, and think the same, we are still able to have our own points of view, we can look different, and we can break out of that pattern.

Along with using images, text has also been used, including text from dystopian literature, song lyrics and politicians to highlight the concepts of the future, being generic and consumerism either within the images or within the title.

Finally, as 2020 looks like it could have been written as an “Orwellian” dystopian novel, where it was often difficult to buy necessities (e.g. toilet paper, art supplies), all artworks were made with materials, including printed quotes and images that the artist had on hand.

Liz Grylls' latest DVA exhibition is opening Friday, August 21 at 6pm and running until September 5.

Our new General Manager at DVA, Lynda McCaffery, has begun and brought with her a passion for the arts, a skill set that is enviable of most and an attitude to tackle anything and everything that is thrown DVA’s way! Is anyone else COVID-19’d out? I am.

I stopped reading papers and I rarely watch the news.

Not because I don’t care or am not concerned, but because it is all consuming!

It does, however, mean that I have been able to concentrate on my arts practise. It means I can reconnect with my family (and my garden), and it means at DVA we can reinterpret the way we approach our ‘new normal’.

We have ventured into online exhibition creation and as a result we are now offering our exhibition program, shortened a little, but with an added online element to enable a wider reach and point of sale option.

Our first public exhibition that will be opened is on the 29th of MAY!

Quick, stick it in your calendar… I’ll wait ;)

We of course will be adhering to social distancing for the health and safety of all of our attendees at the opening, but won’t it be so nice to have an opening that is well attended and shows the thriving artistic heart of Darwin that continues to pump. We have an advantage over the rest of Australia, we can do this, we are allowed, so come and support the opening of our members and magnificent artists Rebecca Smyth, Amber Reid and Heather Whybrow.

I don’t want to bang on too much in this blog but I wanted to make sure everyone is aware that the DVA AGM is happening on Tuesday May 26th, at DVA (Ground Floor, Harbour View Plaza), from 6pm. Please, if you are keen to support this wonderful organisation and volunteer your time on the board as an executive member or as general member, come on down and join us. Get in touch with Lynda or Shauna and get a nomination form ready to go and endorsed. There will be a few positions up for grabs. I myself will be stepping away from DVA as Chair, not because I don’t love or believe wholeheartedly in this ARI, but because I am facing personal matters that won’t go away anytime soon and will not allow me to be the best Chair I can be for this worthwhile Arts Space. I will however, remain on the board as a General Member.

If you are interested in joining me on the board… GET INVOLVED! DVA is a great place that is looking to the future of Visual Arts in the Territory.

A Message To Our Members

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and in line with the advice from Australia’s government and public health officials, the Darwin Visual Arts Association has closed our Harbour View Plaza gallery space for the foreseeable future.

Unfortunately, this means the DVA Exhibition Program for 2020 will no longer take place within our physical gallery space, as originally planned.

Instead, DVA proposes to ‘migrate’ all of our artists’ exhibitions into the online space, and exhibit virtually.

As soon as it is possible, of course, we will reopen the DVA Gallery.

We understand that this news may come as yet another blow to you, our amazing artists, who are no doubt already being affected by the postponement or cancellation of events, closure of public spaces and wide-spread loss of income being experienced by the Top End art community.

The DVA staff and Board members are working hard to find a solution so that we may continue to support you and the visual arts community throughout this trying period. We understand the need for additional support from your artist-run-initiative during this uncertain time and look forward to diversifying our offerings for you, our members.

Any feedback, suggestions and ideas are most welcome, please email us or call the gallery to discuss any thoughts you might have.

We look forward to stepping into the realm of online exhibitions to continue to provide a platform to showcase the amazing artistic talent of the Top End.

Whoa already the year is disappearing! March is here!

What a great start we have had to the year. Our climate exhibition was a great success and we are so glad that it gave our DVA members an opportunity to be involved in the Darwin City Council’s CITYIFE Lightbox project. I want to thank our judges for taking their time to select the successful works from the exhibition; Clare Armitage – Assistant Curator from MAGNT and Lina Paselli-Kruse from Malak Marketplace and Clean Living in the Tropics. All of the artists’ work showed a great amount of conceptual diversity and techniques, with a combined message of being consciously aware of the changing climate not only in the Territory but globally. Congratulations to everyone who was selected.

The latest news at DVA is that we now have an answer from Arts NT for our 5-year funding. We have been lucky enough to increase our funding by $10,000 which means we have $69,500 each year to employ staff, run and maintain the space, plus within our agreement we also have the continued use of the gallery and office at Harbor View and access in the near future (fingers crossed its soon) to art studios at Winnellie. This means that we can now confidently employ a GM and continue to employ our wonderful Programs Officer Shauna.

The GM role for applications closes on the 4th of March and we hope to have the successful candidate beginning by the middle of March. When the successful candidate begins, please be patient with them, as they are beginning a role in a new environment with a new organisation and all the support and help we can give from the board and from our members during this transition is imperative for the organisation to grow and be supported.

Currently at DVA we are in fundraising mode. Our Creative Partnerships campaign ends in May and we have a target of $15,000 to raise which will be matched dollar for dollar, but only if we reach this amount. We will be having our annual Deckchair fundraiser and our trivia night to raise funds for this campaign, and we have recently acquired a “tap and go” donation point which you can use at our openings and public events. We will be having a 50/50 exhibition where members who are so inclined can show work at the gallery where 50% of profits are donated from the sale of works to DVA to help reach our target and the other 50% is in your pocket… BUT WHY? I hear you ask.

At DVA we have a strategic plan which all of you can check out whenever you like, in that plan we have outlined a few areas for improvement. One is the engagement of young artists in the 17-25-year-old bracket. With some of the funds raised we would like to create a residency in which a young artist can come and use a studio space, create a body of work and exhibit their creations in a professional gallery, all the while learning the process of exhibiting in an inclusive and nurturing environment.

Another project we would love to see established through DVA is a Northern Territory Contemporary Art Award, an all-inclusive award for any Territorian artists that wants to participate. TOGART was the prize many years ago and we would like to have one similar again. Awards like this create opportunity for artists and creatives to make, to participate, to grow and to be challenged. It is what we are all about at DVA.

We are also very excited about our upcoming exhibition program for 2020, I cannot wait to see the works on the walls, and we cannot wait for more in-depth and diverse conversations to be happening in and around these exhibitions. Fernanda Dupal and I are working on getting some conversations happening at DVA to create a discourse about contemporary visual art in Darwin and surrounds. We are really keen to talk about and discuss with you all what is happening locally, nation-wide and internationally in the visual arts. We are excited to get art film nights happening and even more excited that by opening up the middle space at the gallery we have a space for more experimentation, digital works and sculptural pieces within DVA.

I would like to remind members that with our latest exhibition policy we have set deadlines for deposits and have official paper trails now in place. Invoices will be sent, and contracts are to be signed with a deposit attached. As a committee we have made the decision to take 15% commission from all works sold through a DVA exhibition and will no longer allow the facilitating of private sales, with all exhibition sales to be completed through the gallery. This is usual of NFP galleries country wide and we have chosen this small commission fee to cover the staff selling and showing work on your behalf as compensation.

You will also note that in our exhibition and workshop policies all imagery of children will need to be accompanied by permissions from consenting parents or guardians. This is in line with our ARTS NT funding agreement and with the Australia Council for the Arts . For any more information regarding this please see the Australia Council for the Arts website . I know and understand that it can be confusing as to what, as artists, we are and aren’t allowed to take artistic freedom with, but our children are amongst our most vulnerable of people and we need to make sure that due diligence is being used in the most professional of standards when it comes to using their images.

Lastly, I would like to let you all know that we have some great sponsorship this year that has been organised by the board. E-Print Darwin has come on board and are offering great support to our exhibitors and to DVA for a variety of printing needs. They are the only Illford printery in Darwin so are great for any photographic works you may have that need expert printing.

The other sponsorship we have secured is for alcoholic beverages at our openings. Each opening will be sponsored by a different beer and or cider and we are so grateful to Lion for their support at DVA.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!

Wait! What! Christmas time already? Where has this year gone? BUT what a year it’s been!

Thank you to all of our members, volunteers, and supporters, the year has been transitional, but we are settled into Harbour View Plaza and ready to face 2020 head-on. Our exhibitions this year were amazing, thought-provoking, experimental, controversial and creative. To all those who exhibited, thank you and congratulations on the shows. I hope that having a space to exhibit your work has inspired you to continue on a creative journey where practice, experimentation, and play is at the forefront of your making.

The exhibition proposals that have come through for our 2020 program are just as exciting and I can’t wait to see the new works hanging.

DVA is still awaiting a decision on 5-year funding support from Arts NT for our 2020 - 2024 programming and staffing. As a board, we have asked for an increase to our general operating costs so that we can employ a full-time GM, a part-time Gallery Manager, a casual Projects Officer, and a casual Program Support officer. Having all of these positions funded properly will give DVA, its members and volunteers more scope and room to move to achieve the best for DVA, the Darwin and broader arts community. To see any of our documents regarding strategic planning for the future at DVA please contact the office and a copy can be sent to you.

We hope that Arts NT can make this announcement before Christmas so that we can advertise for a General Manager position in the new year. I want to thank Britt Guy who has been our interim GM for all of her hard work and professionalism in getting us ready for 2020, for working with our artists and being a great asset to DVA. Enjoy your holiday.

Shauna, thank you also for jumping in feet first and doing a great job of supporting DVA its artists, member, and volunteers. You are greatly appreciated, and we can’t wait to see you again in the New Year.

To the general committee members. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your tireless support. Attending meetings, writing documents, applying for funding, being at openings, painting walls, liaising with industry, organising events and supporting artists. Your time, enthusiasm and passion for the arts does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Enjoy the silly season, all of you!

CLIMATE- A DVA Member Show

We are calling for artworks for a member show to kick off the DVA gallery exhibition program in 2020!

Climate Change is on the tip of everyone’s tongue from politicians, farmers to climate scientists and young people. Opinions differ but everyone has one. The City of Darwin has declared a climate emergency, and this is a fantastic opportunity for the community to reflect on social, political and environmental elements of this international phenomena.

The exhibition will be judged by a panel of local arts industry members with 10 works selected by a panel of judges to feature in the City of Darwin Lightboxes across the city. The judges will select high quality works befitting the theme from a breadth of emerging and established artists.

Terms of Entry to the Exhibition

· Be a current member of DVA.

· Drop off your work by 5pm Wednesday 22nd of January with your name, year of creation, medium and price details.

· If your work is sold you will be paid, at the end of the exhibition, the works cost minus 15% commission.

· Inclusion and final hang of work is at DVA’s discretion based on organisational policies.

· Pick up unsold work week of 24th February 2020.

· The work will be judged by a panel of local industry for inclusion in the City of Darwin Lightboxes exhibition.

If you are selected to exhibit in the City of Darwin Lightboxes:

· You will be paid an artist fee of $375.

· Your work will be professionally photographed for use by City of Darwin to print the work to the Lightbox specifications.

· You will be invited to the opening of the Lightboxes and media opportunities prior.

Beneath the Surface is a series of mixed media artworks created by local artist Pascale Zufferey. Pascale’s artworks reflect the Top End; the people, landscape and its wildlife, particularly the bird life.

In this exhibition she works primarily in acrylics and uses a combination of collage elements: paper, leaves, bark, snake skin, texture pastes, prints, pastels and line drawings. These are then over painted with glazes of colour and drawn back into creating beautiful multi-layered works.

Beneath the Surface is a playful look at our wonderful landscapes and the little things hidden beneath the surface. The artist invites you to come closer to the artworks and discover some of the elements hidden beneath the layers.

October Message From Your Chair...

Good morning, good afternoon or perhaps good evening,

Whatever time of the day you are reading this, thank you for taking the time to read.

So why are you reading this? Well, as Chair I have decided to write a blog entry every now and to give members (and those wanting to join this fab organisation), a heads up to what is going on behind the scenes at Darwin Visual Arts. It will also be emailed out for those who don’t regularly check the website.

In truth, I had this blog ready to go a few weeks ago but didn’t post because as you may already know DVA has been going through some big changes of late.

Our gallery manager, Belinda moved into a new role outside of DVA that is full of excitement, creativity and adventure. We THANK YOU Belinda for all your efforts over the last year and a half you were at Darwin Visual Art. Belinda was key in creating the new DVA at Harbour view and her expertise in curation will be missed. The executive committee and our board, as well as our members, I am sure, wish B every success in her new role.

A few weeks ago, Alison decided to pursue her passion for consultancy work. She too has moved on from DVA. Alison did massive things for DVA. Amongst everything else Alison did for DVA, Al moved us from Frog Hollow and dealt professionally with very difficult and testing trials in between setting us up at Harbour View. Alison really supported our org by gaining several opportunities for our artists to create new work and get paid for this through public programs. She worked hard to set up workshop programs, succeeded in getting the Arts Trail funding, contributed significantly to the success of our Creative Partnerships project and was at every opening supporting DVA and our artists and was key in getting DVA back on track to a brighter future. Thank you, Alison, for all you did to keep the DVA engine running and we thank you for getting us set up at Harbour View. Best wishes for the future.

So, within the movement of staff at DVA we have since recruited Shauna Upton as a program support officer, she has exceptional skills in marketing and media, organisation, support and administration. Her professionalism and experience in the arts sector is going to be of great help to us all to keep the org rolling. She is a quick learner and has great ideas for DVA in moving forward.

As a board we decided to recruit an Interim General Manager; Britt Guy. Britt has a wealth of experience in the arts sector in the NT and runs her own arts-based company ACCOMPLICE. Her knowledge, networks and passion for the arts is refreshing. In her three months with us Britt in partnership with Shauna has been charged with creating our exhibition program and generating an online campaign for our Creative Partnership success.

Another major part of Britt times with us will be taken up by streamlining the administrative side of DVA. As an arts org we need to make sure that all of our processes are streamlined and working in the best interest of all those associated with us. Britt will be looking at our contracts for exhibitions, our invoicing processes, our workshops agreements where any amendments/improvements will go to the exec committee and the board for approvals.

Please pop in and say g’day to both Britt and Shauna, they will of course be around at our openings too and are happy to chat anytime to support our members and the public.

Now, the reason that we recruited an Interim GM is because our 5-year strategic funding was put in last week and we won’t be notified till the end of November if an increase will be successful. One of the major issues of recruitment here at DVA was the amount of funding and self-generated income to support employees appropriately. We hope to amend this with the funding application that we have submitted. We have requested on behalf of our members the ability to employ a full-time General Manager, a part-time Gallery Manager, a part-time Projects Officer and a part-time Program Support Officer. We know that the Arts Sector in Australia is moving away from a heavy reliance on Government funding and to become more strategic in generating income outside of this. We have asked for an initial increase with the hopes that throughout the next five years we can increase our funding through differing agencies. Fundraising, corporate and business sponsorship, donation, sales of work and more creative ventures. I won’t bombard you all too much more but wanted to leave you with some key dates and points;

• We were successful in our application to join Creative Partnerships in our fundraising campaign, this means for EVERY DOLLAR DONATED TO DVA, Creative Partnerships will match it till MAY 2020, so get donating “pass it on” to your friends. We will be launching an online funding campaign for this soon too, so keep an eye out, jump online and get involved.

• Kristen Johnson and Kelly Vains exhibitions will close soon, the 26th of October, so get in to have a look whilst you can.

This small scale exhibition explores our attachment to inanimate objects, from the extreme end of obsessive hoarding to sentimental attachments to objects that we hold dear.

Why do we find it difficult to throw away an old doll? It is just plastic after all. Is there a more tragic sight than a child's once loved toy found discarded.

We are caught between a world of new and exciting cheap toys that are loved for a moment and then discarded, and the obsession we have with hoarding objects that connect us to fading memories.

This exhibition attempts to compartmentalise and make sense of these attachments.

Darwin's Rebecca Smyth was diagnosed with breast cancer late last year, after a string of topsy-turvy years.

A cartoon just appeared in her head that same day, and as she drew it later she realised that this could be a coping mechanism. This series just kept growing as Rebecca progressed through surgery, chemo, radiation and a long slow recovery.

When it was all just getting too depressing and bleak she saw an exhibition of Brian Bulley's whimsical artworks, and it inspired the Owl and the Pussycat to come out to play for a while, as a bit of relief.

Join us for the opening of Rebecca's exhibition and journey into the ups and downs of her diagnosis, treatment and subsequent recovery.

What's in the workshop: The Pulima in Paiwan means the people who are talented with special skills.

Pavavalung family is well known as "The Pulima" in Paiwan tribe, which is one of the Taiwan Indigenous peoples.

This workshop introduces you to The Pulima's world, Etan will demonstrate one of the important techniques that he uses in his amazing artworks called "Vecik" (carved lines and patterns) , also you will be working with Etan's carving pieces, you can also bring the printing home.

Hi everyone and thank you DVA for creating this new and innovative way of getting to know every artist/creator in the Darwin and Northern Territory art working community.

This new blogosphere and very new website will (I believe) become one of the most informative and much visited parts of the new DVA website.

My encaustic works have all been created at my bush studio in Humpty Doo, for over the last five years dating back to early 2014, previous to this I worked solely in acrylic for my abstract works, occasionally changing to gouache and water colour for my landscapes.

A very big part of my physical/psyche affections belong in the nature of nature all around me. Working with bees wax is indeed part of this nature in itself, the smells of the sometimes different wax form a different flower or part of the land, the smell of hog bristles burning in the flames that have separated from the brush I am using, all along with some of the material I use in my works come from the immediate surroundings of this nature around my bush studio workshop. http://buffalostopendarts.com/

The seclusion of my studio means I can work all hours of the day and night on my works and most of the time if not sleeping or eating I am creating. Unfortunately at this moment in time I have to work in government employment to finance my artwork and artistic lifestyle, however here again this gives me strength and purpose to go on and create more, because it’s a complete antithesis to my art world.

I started to paint when I was a little fella at the age of about seven or so, the lady that lived on a farm next to us was an Art teacher, I sat with her on weekends and she tutored me a little on using oils.

Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid or paste is then applied to a surface of usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used. In making such encaustic work it is concealed that a small percentage in working this is dangerous, burns from the molten wax, toxic fumes from the oil or pigments used, to heat the wax we need tools that are hotter than that of most tools used in regular art works.
